Here are some pictures from our Scotland journey in our 1-ton. It was a 2600 miles trip through the lake district, Glen Coe, Fort William, Isle of Skye, Ullapool, Aviemore and the Yorkshire Dales in 20 days. The fuel consumption was 415 litres and 2,5 litre engine oil. Breakdowns: no, only a loose scew in the flasher unit. We discovered two very nice byways in the truck and round about 60 miles of walking. We had a lot of fun during our trip, only the weather could have been better during the last week.

| I'm green with envy. Udo, am I right in thinking you got a standard box on yours? If not what of average speed can you do with the normal 1 ton box? |

Udos vehicle has a normal box in, he is rebuilding a 1 ton box to go in.
The normal cruising speed with a proper 1 ton box is 45-50 mph...they will do more, but probably a bad idea unless you are an oil baron. _________________

Yes there is a standard box inside. Cruising speed with a caravan behind is 50 to 60 miles, but when there is a hill in front of you the speed goes down to 30 miles on a motorway. On B roads with steep hills (25% in the lake district) I had to use the low box without caravan??? .
The original box should solv the problem. _________________ Udo

| Thanks - what going to happen to the winch when the original box goes in? Is there a solution for shaft drive winches off 1 ton boxes? I was looking at a defender winch unit the other day - the rear bearing seems more appropriately postioned - anyknow if that might fit? Do the mounting holes line? |

Drop PTOs do exist for the 1 ton box...finding one is another issue. I very much doubt a defender item would fit, a defender box would be all metric for one thing, with different sizes for mainshafts, bolt holes, etc etc. _________________

The correct gearbox is more important for me than the winch. If I don't find a suitable 1-ton PTO the winch will come off, or I'll do an exchange with the capstan winch of my SWB. _________________ Udo

I've seen people convert the PTO winch to hydraulic, if you can locate a hydraulic pump to hang off your transfer case.
Looks like it was a really nice trip. _________________ Tom Rowe

There is a pump fitted behind my gearbox, but I don't want to have a hydraulic winch. There is a lot of fittment to do for it and you have to cut away the tool box for the tank. _________________ Udo

Hi Udo I have heard about your lovely Land Rover and its been a pleasure looking at your photos it looks fantastic. Dont worry you can make an addapter to fit the normal pto onto the one ton box by making a spacer but you need a few end caps. A friend of mine made one and it worked fine.

Hi Steve,
thanks for the compliments!
That would be a pefect solution making an adapter for the PTO. But what's about the end bearing of the main shaft? Does the bigger bearing fit to a standard PTO? Do I have to modify the PTO front gear? _________________ Udo

| I will find out I have just tried to ring him but he has changed his number but I will catch him when he showed me it looked easy, its old age creeping up I forget more than I learn these days. From memory it was a couple of standard back plates with the centres cut out but not sure what he did with the bearing or if he had to. Steve |

very nice pictures indeed. Always loved the perfect original sight of your truck. Hope you don't mind I "borowed" some of your photographs for my screen saver.
Regards, Wilberth
BTW call me a purist, but I love the idea that you're going for the approporiate gearbox. |

No problem wilberth, a few mates did the same!
I wanted the truck as original as possible, and it drives much smoother than it did with the standard box in. _________________ Udo
